The iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has proven itself to be one of the biggest high-scoring venues in India. Even after the stadium completed a major rehabilitation in early 2021, the venue did not lose its sheen of hosting some high-scoring crackers between ODI giants.
Here, we take a look at five of the highest ODI totals ever recorded at the Narendra Modi Stadium, previously known as the Motera Stadium, since its inception to India’s 356-run riot in February 2025.
5. Pakistan 319-7 in 48 overs vs India, 2005
In match number four of Pakistan’s six-game ODI series against India back in April 2005 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the ‘Men in Green’ chased down their 316-run target in a 48-overs-a-side affair. Opening batters Salman Butt, Shahid Afridi and number three Abdul Razzaq started off with blistering 40s before Shoaib Malik and then captain Inzamam-ul-Haq carted run-a-ball half-centuries each.
Inzamam also notched up the winning runs off the last ball of the match as Pakistan reached 319-7 from 48 overs to bring the series to levelling terms.
4. West Indies 324-4 in 50 overs vs India, 2002
Known as the Sardar Patel Stadium at the time, a visiting West Indies team carted 324-4 from 50 overs in the fourth ODI of their seven-match series against hosts India back in November 2002. Still in the formative years of his ODI career, legendary opener Chris Gayle bludgeoned 140 runs from just 127 balls with 12 boundaries and five huge sixes to top score in the high-scoring innings. Ramnaresh Sarwan at number four remained unbeaten at 99 from 104 balls while captain Carl Hooper provided his team the death-overs impetus with a swift 36*.
3. India 325-5 in 47.4 overs vs West Indies, 2002
Tasked to chase 325 runs for a win later in the same game, Team India mowed down its target in just 47.4 overs with five wickets to spare against West Indies in Motera in November 2002. Captain and legendary opening batter Sourav Ganguly started off the chase with a fiery 16-ball 28 while VVS Laxman at number three pacified the Indian innings with a composed 66 from 74 deliveries. Rahul Dravid conjured a fluent century from his end, carving 109 unbeaten runs from just 124 balls with eight boundaries to take India past the finishing line alongside Sanjay Bangar (57*off 41).
2. India 356 all out in 50 overs vs England, 2025
Team India mounted 356 runs from 50 overs against England in the final ODI of their three-match series in February 2025. With series already in India’s pocket after securing comfortable wins in the first two games, in-form opener Shubman Gill flayed England’s visiting attack with 112 regal runs off 102 balls with 14 boundaries and three huge sixes at the gigantic Narendra Modi Stadium.
Virat Kohli (52 off 55) and Shreyas Iyer (78 off 64) also made swift half-centuries in the middle overs, while KL Rahul clubbed a fiery 40 during the backend of the innings. England did fight back with late wickets, picking up six of them during the final 10 overs to keep India down to 356.
1. South Africa 365-2 in 50 overs vs India, 2010
After losing the first two ODIs of their three-match tour of India in February 2010, a rampaging South African unit came out all-guns blazing in the dead-rubber third match at the Ahmedabad venue, then famously known as the Sardar Patel Stadium or Motera Stadium. Batting first, South African openers Loots Bosman (68 off 46) and Hashim Amla (87 off 103) scored cracking half-centuries and staged 113 runs together for the opening wicket in just 15.4 overs.
Captain Jacques Kallis and a 26-year-old AB De Villiers carried on South Africa’s rampage by sharing 173 runs for the third wicket in just 103 balls. Both Kallis (104* off 94) and Villiers (102* off 59) smeared burgeoning tons as the Proteas amassed 365-2 to prevent an away whitewash against MS Dhoni’s India.
