Punjab Kings had a torrid time on the field last night, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru swatted them aside, sealing an emphatic victory in qualifier 1 of the IPL 2025. Captain Shreyas Iyer was one of the biggest disappointments for PBKS, with Josh Hazlewood getting him out cheaply in the high-voltage affair.

Ex-IPL Coach Criticises Shreyas Iyer For Batting Failure

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, RCB had a dream start to the game, with Yash Dayal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissing the dynamic duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh in quick succession.

As Shreyas Iyer entered the middle at number four, PBKS had expected the skipper to bail them out of trouble with a game-breaking knock.

However, contrary to expectations, Iyer failed to fire in the crucial clash, becoming Josh Hazlewood's first victim of the night. His dismissal opened the floodgates for the Kings, who lost regular wickets and eventually got bundled out for a paltry 101-run total.

After the game concluded, former SRH coach Tom Moody slammed Iyer for not reading the game situation.

As quoted by Express Sports, the former Australian all-rounder reckoned Iyer should've played out Hazlewood's spell before shifting gears, a tactic that could've paid rich dividends for Punjab Kings.

“To me, he totally misread the game situation and his own situation. Yes, he would be aware that Hazlewood has had him a few times in the past. He would know the exact numbers," Moody stated.
"At times, you need to put your ego in your pocket and just move forward. To me that was the perfect example of not reading the situation – trying to overcome something that has been a darkness in the past instead of just swallowing your pride and just moving on by just accumulating. You only had to see Hazlewood out," he added.

A Look At Iyer's Miserable T20 Record Against Hazlewood

Known for his ability to hit the corridor of uncertainty with accuracy and precision, Josh Hazlewood has always been Iyer's nemesis. Statistically, the Australian speedster has dismissed the Indian batter four times in T20s, with Iyer managing only 11 runs in 22 deliveries.

Thus, Moody is actually spot on in his assessment and Iyer could've tormented RCB's middle-overs bowling had he batted a bit more carefully against Hazlewood.
