Afghanistan A captain Darwish Rasooli’s career-best List A knock gave his team hope to defeat Sri Lanka A today. While it didn’t happen as Sri Lanka A ended up sealing a 249-run chase in the 42nd over, the knock has unequivocally provided Rasooli a shot in the arm with regard to more chances in the senior team.
Coming in to bat at No. 4 in the second over, the right-handed batter witnessed the top-order scoring a cumulative of one run at the Zayed Cricket Stadium. Before getting out with just two balls remaining in the innings, Rasooli scored a determined 155 (147) with the help of eight fours and sixes each.
With Afghanistan A putting 248/8 on board after winning the toss and opting to bat first, 62.75% of the runs were scored by the skipper.
Speaking particularly of ODI cricket, only eight batters have scored a higher percentage of runs in a completed innings. For Afghanistan, Ibrahim Zadran’s mind-blowing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 century against England saw him scoring 54.46% of team runs in Lahore.
Who Is Darwish Rasooli?
Born in Laghman, Rasooli was part of Afghanistan’s ICC U-19 World Cup 2018 squad. In fact, he was their third-highest run-scorer for scoring 155 runs at an average and strike rate of 38.75 and 101.30 respectively including two half-centuries.
Having made his T20 and List A debuts before the World Cup, Rasooli made his First-class debut a month after playing the semi-final against Australia in Christchurch.
Four years later, it was during Afghanistan’s tour of Bangladesh 2022 when Rasooli was handed a T20I debut. Since then, the 25-year-old player has represented his country nine times in the shortest format.
118 runs at an average and strike rate of 16.85 and 104.42 respectively hasn’t justified his talent but he is expected to make amends in the near future.
The pinnacle of Rasooli’s professional career has been leading Afghanistan A to an Emerging Asia Cup title win last year. In a tournament where they defeated India A and Sri Lanka A in the semi-final and final respectively, Rasooli hadn’t contributed much with the bat in hand.
However, considering how he is trusted to lead Afghanistan A time and again, one expects Rasooli to come up with more innings like the above-mentioned to prove his batting credentials.
