With a rich history between two of the most successful franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), each encounter between these titans promises an enthralling affair.

In their 31 encounters to date, Chennai and Kolkata have built a compelling rivalry. Chennai has maintained dominance, securing victory in 19 of these matches, while Kolkata has managed only 11 wins.

As the Knights prepare to challenge the Chepauk fortress once again, reminiscent of their success in 2012, when they face the Super Kings on April 8 in Chennai, it's worth revisiting their last encounter to gauge the upcoming clash's potential intensity.

When CSK Faced KKR In 2023

It was the 61st game of the IPL 2023. KKR were under the pump, having lost their home game against CSK in Kolkata earlier in the season. However, in this game they were able to pull off something incredible.

Then CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first, only to witness half of his side dismissed for a paltry 75 runs on the board. Initially, CSK's openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway made a strong start, amassing 48 runs in the first five overs at a rate of 9.48 runs per over. However, their momentum faltered with the introduction of spin in the middle overs.

The team's score plummeted from 48/0 to 72/5. Although CSK didn’t lose any more wickets until the last over, their run rate slowed considerably during the middle overs, managing to score only 44 runs from overs 6-15 and reaching a total of just 144 in their allotted 20 overs.

KKR suffered early setbacks as they began their chase. CSK's ace seamer, Deepak Chahar, provided an ideal start with the ball for the home team by claiming three wickets during the powerplay.

With Chahar accounting for all three dismissals, KKR found themselves reeling at 33/3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Jason Roy, and Venkatesh Iyer were all sent back by Chahar. However, then KKR skipper Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh sustained the momentum, ultimately securing a six-wicket victory over CSK on their home turf.
