Shreyas Iyer's rise into prominence as an all-format batter for India makes one fondly recall the time when the young Mumbaikar first burst into reckoning in top-level game via the 2015 auction held for that year's edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Having enjoyed a tremendous run for Mumbai and India 'A', Iyer put his name forward in the bidding war at the base sum of just INR 10 lakhs. The youngster would've determined his prize at the time keeping in mind his lack of experience and the desire to find playing opportunities in the marquee T20 league.

As it panned out, coaches and scouts involved within the Indian cricket set-up and with IPL franchises seemed to have kept a close eye on Iyer's growth at the domestic level as they hatch their bets on the player in an intense bidding war.

When Delhi Picked Shreyas Iyer For Maiden IPL Stint

Iyer, who had played only three previous T20s as a 20-year-old Mumbai batter, fetched bids from prominent IPL franchises Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as they entered an intense competition to bag his services and transformed the player's life with their paddle.

Notably, KKR, for whom Iyer currently plays in the IPL as a middle-order giant and skipper, were the first ones to raise interest against his name back at the 2015 auction. The popular franchise was joined in the quest to bag the Mumbaikar by the mighty successful MI and the two sides went at loggerheads to each other for the desired pick.

The tussle kept going on before Delhi became the latest entrant and raised the prize for the Indian uncapped player. Once the prize reached 2.60 crores, KKR and MI both opted out of it and Delhi confirmed Iyer's services.

That began a fruitful association which allowed Iyer to undergo a rapid rise with consistent game time and assurance under his belt. The cricketer played for the Delhi franchise until IPL 2021 and made 2,375 runs over 87 matches before moving to KKR via the IPL 2022 mega-auction at INR 12.25 crores.
