In a trip down memory lane 8 years ago, on this day, England's Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow delivered an extraordinary performance, during the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Back in 2016, England were touring South Africa, where a real spectacle unfolded with the entry of Ben Stokes, who went on to produce a remarkable innings. He scored 258 runs off just 198 deliveries, before eventually getting run out by the agile fielding of AB de Villiers.

Batting at number six, the current English Test captain came out to the middle on 167/4 in the 56th over. Stokes and Bairstow's partnership of 399 runs for the sixth wicket rewrote the record books, surpassing the previous mark set by New Zealand's Kane Williamson and BJ Watling in 2015. The historic duo's stand remains the second-highest ever for England in Test cricket, showcasing their exceptional synergy at the crease.

His explosive innings included the second-fastest double-century in Test history, achieved in a mere 163 balls. Complementing Stokes' heroics was Jonny Bairstow, who contributed a stellar 150 not out, steering England to a formidable total of 629/6d.

Despite their phenomenal efforts, the match concluded in a draw, but the cricketing world was left in awe of the hard-hitting display from both sides.

In the post-game analysis, Stokes, rightfully named Player of the Match, encapsulated his innings with a modest reflection, stating, "When I started going, we had a good score on the board, so I thought me getting out here won't be the worst thing. I just went for my shots, and it came off."
