Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni and host broadcaster Murali Karthik were involved in an awkward discussion post the formers' 27-run win over the Delhi Capitals after the commentator confused him over the Impact Sub rule.

During the post-match chat, Karthik said MSD if the skipper was tempted to bring in Mitchell Santner as the Impact substitute given how much the surface was aiding spinners.

CSK had instead invoked talented Sri Lankan death bowler Matheesha Pathirana as the impact substitute as they already had the trio of Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja and Maheesh Theekshana to do the job in the spin department.

Dhoni assumed that Pathirana was always in the playing XI and that he wasn't substituted in the 2nd half.

Here's the transcript of the conversation between Murali Karthik and MS Dhoni:

Kartik: Was there a temptation just before the impact substitution was made, that you could have gone for Mitchell Santner, was there ever a thought in your head?

Dhoni: I think if you have four foreigners in the squad, you cannot replace a...

Kartik interrupts: No, I am saying if you had one replacement in place of one foreigner... You still wouldn't have?

Dhoni: No, Mo [Moeen Ali] has already batted. So... (smiles)

Kartik: I forgot, sorry, yeah!

Dhoni: But I would have loved Mitch because he is a bowler who has done very well on flat wickets with the new ball. On this kind of a wicket, he is someone who hits the seam and bowls at a good pace...

Kartik interrupts: No in place of Devon Conway, someone like Santner could have come in.

Dhoni: I don't know. I don't know the four foreign players so. Who hadn't batted?

Kartik: I think you had three foreigners if I am not mistaken... Anyways, anyways, it's okay. It was just something we had a thought in our commentary box as well.

Pathirana, as usual, did a brilliant job at the death as he finished with figures of 3/37 in 4 overs.
