Virender Sehwag Sees 'Mystery Spinner' As a Contender for India's World Cup 2023 Squad

With the ICC World Cup 2023 months away, several Indian and international cricketers are giving their auditions for a spot in their respective national sides, while playing in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Scheduled to be held in India sometime in October, the role of the spinners could determine the outcome of their team's fate.

The Indian team faces their own dilemma with a flurry of spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, Ravi Bisnoi, and Varun Chakravarthy in contention for a place.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has termed Chakravarthy a contender for a place in the Indian squad for the WC, with an impressive outing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2023.

Chakravarthy claimed four wickets for KKR in their first home game of the season, helping his franchise beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 81 runs on Thursday.

Here's what Sehwag said

"Varun Chakravarthy doesn't have the ball that goes away like a proper wrist spinner. He relies on topspin and googlies predominantly and the RCB batters didn't play him well, getting played on a couple of times. Who knows, a great season here could make him a contender for the 2023 World Cup in India,"

Apart from frontline spinners, India has as many as three spinning all-rounders — Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar — making the inclusion of a third specialist bowler difficult.

Chakravarthy had a disastrous outing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, remaining wicketless in the tournament, having featured in all three India matches.

Overall, the leg-break bowler has picked 2 wickets in six T20Is.
