In a remarkable turn of events, experienced South African batter Temba Bavuma has completed 1000 runs in ODI cricket. Bavuma, who slammed a scintillating ton in the second ODI against West Indies, joined elite South African batters with this milestone.
Overall, the 32-year-old is the 29th Proteas batter to enter the 1000-run club in ODI cricket. After having a shilly-shally start to his ODI career, Bavuma finally cemented his place after the 2019 World Cup.
His consistency and gorgeous stroke play helped him establish himself as a vital cog and later rewarded him with the ODI captaincy.
The batter, who recently hammered a magnificent Test century in Johannesburg, continued his onslaught on the Caribbean Men, playing a glorious 144-run knock off just 118 deliveries in the second ODI. His century, studded with eleven fours and seven massive sixes, earned him plaudits from all corners of the world.
However, he was the lone warrior with the bat for South Africa, who were bundled out for 287 while chasing a 336-run target. While Bavuma kept the scoreboard ticking at one end, his teammates departed cheaply, resulting in the hosts' 48-run defeat.
Trailing by 0-1, South Africa will aim at restoring parity when they take on the visitors in the decider scheduled in Potchefstroom this Tuesday.
