Ravi Ashwin reveals what he would've done if missed Nawaz's wide ball

India defeated Pakistan in a topsy-turvy thriller to launch their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in style. While the emphatic win was laid out off the back of Virat Kohli’s dexterity, it was Ravi Ashwin who landed the finishing blow off the final delivery.

Arriving at the crease with two runs to win, the Indian all-rounder stood still and saw off a wide down his leg side from Pakistan spinner Mohammad Nawaz. Later, he scooped the ball over mid-off to bring up the winning runs.


R Ashwin says he would have retired upon failure against Pakistan

After the match, R Ashwin jokingly claimed that he would have announced retirement had he failed to read Mohammad Nawaz’s wide. While speaking on BCCI.tv, he said:

“Somebody asked me if that Nawaz ball had turned and hit you on the pads, what would you have done? I said I would've quickly rushed to the dressing room picked up my Twitter and said 'Thank you for all the great times I have had in my cricketing career. It was a wonderful journey.”

Notably, Ashwin was also a star of the show in India’s subsequent outing against Netherlands. The ace spinner claimed two wickets off his economical four overs. He dismissed Netherland’s prominent middle-order batters Colin Ackermann and Tom Cooper in quick succession and scripted a 56-run win for India.
