Prithvi Shaw returned with another listless performance this IPL 2023 season, this time against the Mumbai Indians in Delhi. The right-handed opener scored just 15 off the 10 deliveries he faced in the innings, as an attempted sweep off Hrithik Shokeen became the undoing of his promising start in the match.

His latest failure means that the cricketer has only managed 34 runs off the first four matches for Delhi Capitals this season. Earlier in the tournament, he registered seven and 12 against Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants respectively, before getting dismissed for a duck against Rajasthan Royals in a 200-plus run-chase.

Fans take a dig at Prithvi Shaw over extended lean patch

Shaw’s dry run with the bat dates back to the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season. While the batting prodigy piled up 595 runs in the tournament across just 10 innings for Mumbai, around 379 of those runs came off a single inning.

His triple ton also marked his career-best score in First-Class cricket, and it took him just 383 deliveries to unleash his match-winning knock. Notably, the 23-year-old managed only one other fifty-plus score, courtesy of the 68 he slammed against Saurashtra.

Shaw’s lean patch with the bat seems to have carried into the IPL, as he has only managed to notch up 34 runs off his first four matches for Delhi Capitals.

After his latest IPL 2023 failure against the Mumbai Indians, a legion of fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment. Some users even claimed that the youngster should be benched by the team management for a while, in a bid to regain his lost focus.

As of now, Prithvi Shaw holds the lowest average among all openers (minimum two innings) this IPL 2023 season. His average of 8.50 falls even below Mumbai Indians’ batting legend Rohit Sharma, who is currently struggling with an average of 11.
