As per the latest development, Pakistan's chief national selector Haroon Rasheed has publicly spoken about the former International cricketer Mohammad Amir's return to the national fold.
The 30-year-old Amir retired from the international sport in 2020 after the Pakistan Cricket Board axed him from the team due to the cricketer's controversial Test retirement at the age of 27 years.
However, a change in the regime in PCB might work in favour of the experienced left-arm seamer. Reportedly, the national selector had heard of Amir taking back his international retirement.
"I am not sure about his (Amir) status. I have heard he is thinking of taking his retirement back. It is good that he is playing. If he continues to perform, he will be in contention for selection like other players," Rasheed said to Cricket Pakistan.
Although Rasheed has questioned Amir's decision to take early retirement and said cricketers should take this consideration carefully.
"I feel players should take decisions after careful consideration. Your single statement can cause controversy. In my opinion, players should focus on their cricket. There are a lot of players and every player considers themselves worthy of selection in playing XI, but it all depends on which players are suitable in certain conditions," he continued.
The former Pakistan batter, citing Shoaib Malik's example, hinted at how his selectional panel would work moving forward. Malik, meanwhile, has shown his will to play T20I cricket; despite almost turning 42 years of age.
"You have to see which players can fit in your current combination. In fact, we also have to see if such player [Malik] can play any specific role in an important event, which can increase the possibility of Pakistan winning. However, if a young player performs the same role, it can be debatable. But I have kept my position open regarding this topic and have not formed a specific strategy. Once my selection panel is formed, we will come with a specific selection policy," Rasheed concluded.
Recently, PCB chairman Najam Sethi has also made it public that the seamer can return to Pakistan's fold, if he takes his retirement back.
At the moment, Amir is serving as a T20 agent across the globe and providing his services in the Bangladesh Premier League 2023.
