Widely regarded as one of the most destructive openers in world cricket, New Zealand's Jesse Ryder's career was cut short abruptly. Ryder mesmerised fans all over the globe, with his power-hitting, but failed to keep up with the demands of the game.

The left-handed batter's history of off-field shenanigans and bouts with alcoholism marred his playing days for the Kiwis, which ended in 2014. He is currently playing for New Zealand in the men's indoor cricket world cup in Australia

Ryder was last seen playing in Legends League Cricket 2022 for Bhilwara Kings.

Speaking with Code Sports, Ryder revealed how he looked forward to getting back into the international set-up after being dropped.

“There’s a period there where I was two years sober and I tried to get back in the team and they didn’t give me an opportunity, That was my period where I was actually dominating domestic outdoor cricket and I wanted to have one more crack while I had such a good mindset. I felt that I could be one of the top batters in the world, but I didn’t get the chance.”

The 38-year-old played 18 Tests, 48 One-Day Internationals, and 22 T20Is for BlackCaps between 2008 and 2014.

However, he continued playing First-Class cricket in New Zealand until 2018, featuring in 131 games, amassing 8,784 runs with 25 tons and 40 half-centuries.

He also played 178 List-A and 148 T20 matches, scoring 9,052 runs across both formats.
