Shikhar Dhawan is at the helm of Team India in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. In the absence of several big names, who are off to Australia for the T20 World Cup, Dhawan will be among India’s most experienced players for the series against the Proteas.

Whenever given an opportunity, the southpaw has proved his mettle, and will be looking to make the most of the opportunity he has received in the ongoing series. Talking about the importance that the series holds for him, Dhawan said that he wishes to play for India in next year’s ODI World Cup.

What Dhawan said on his ambitions

“I always see the positive side of an issue and feel this ODI series is the best opportunity for me to keep the momentum going for a place in the 2023 World Cup. I wish to remain fit and fine and keep batting well so that I can make it to the team,

“I don’t know how long I am going to play cricket, but right now my biggest goal is to play in the 2023 World Cup. Every time I play, I am grateful to God and wish to stay fit. I have had a beautiful career, and I always try to pass my knowledge on to youngsters. Now there is new responsibility on my shoulders, but I am enjoying this opportunity and challenges ahead.”

Shikhar Dhawan is India’s third-highest run-scorer in ODIs amongst the active players, only behind Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He has scored 6647 runs from 158 ODIs including 17 centuries. Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are considered one of the best opening pairs for India in ODIs.

The first ODI between India and South Africa is currently underway. Batting first, the visitors posted 249 runs on the board, while the second innings is currently in play.
