As expected, the Royal Challengers Bangalore released their non-performing players, keeping the core intact ahead of the IPL mini-auction. Josh Hazlewood, RCB's go-to man in the powerplay in the IPL 2022, also retained his place in the team.

However, as Australia have a jam-packed schedule, Hazlewood is expected to miss some matches in the IPL 2023. However, RCB's Director of Cricket Operations, Mike Hesson, believes that English all-rounder David Willey could replace the Australian speedster in the showpiece event.

Answering a question regarding Hazlewood's availability, Hesson indicated that they have Willey to replace him if he misses some matches. The former New Zealand coach also hailed Willey for the flexibility and experience he brings to the table.

Here's what Hesson said

"Hazlewood will obviously be back. There is plenty of cricket for Australia. He might not play the whole tournament but we know that he’s really keen and back to be available for us. We look forward to that,

"We have got David Willey who provides a lot of flexibility in the roles that he plays. To have a player of his experience who brings multiple roles for just two crore is really important to give us that flexibility within the squad. Delighted to have David back.”

Willey can undoubtedly be an ideal replacement for Hazlewood, as he can make the new ball talk. Besides this, the swashbuckling southpaw can also contribute handy runs batting down the order. So, if RCB decide to go with Willey, they will get not only a skilful operator of the new ball but also a fierce hitter of the cricket ball.
