Hosts Australia had a horrible start to their T20 World Cup campaign, losing to Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand by whopping 89 runs in Sydney on Saturday. After allowing New Zealand to post a massive 200 on the board, the defending champions could manage only 111, owing to a collective batting failure.

Following the crushing defeat, legendary ex-opener Mark Waugh argued that Australia weren't proactive on the field and tried to execute their plans in a structured manner, which led to their debacle. Elaborating on the matter, Waugh stressed that Australia seemed unprepared for Finn Allen's onslaught, and the game had slipped from their hands before they buckled up.

The 57-year-old also blamed Aaron Finch for introducing spinners too late and criticised the lengths the Australian bowlers hit during the game.

Here's what Waugh commented

"I just don’t think we were prepared for what was going on. We didn’t think New Zealand would come out and play like that and you’ve got to think on your feet sometimes. You’ve got to change your game plan, and go with your gut feeling sometimes rather than planning everything before the game and it gets a bit too structured,

"The pace just wasn’t working and I thought we bowled it in the ‘hit me’ zone a bit. We probably just over-pitched it. I think Adam Zampa over-pitched it as well."

Bowling seems to be the major issue for the Aussies as they look to lock horns with a spirited Sri Lanka in their second Super 12 fixture in Perth on Tuesday.
