The ongoing discussions surrounding Pakistan skipper Babar Azam's captaincy in all three formats of the game, have yet to cease. Critics have been vocal about the team's unsatisfactory performances in recent matches, and Babar's leadership and slow batting in T20Is, where he opens with wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, have been the subject of censure.

Additionally, former cricketers have publicly disapproved of Pakistan talisman's leadership skills across formats, further fuelling the controversy. The latest addition to the wave of critique is former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali, who has recommended that spin-bowling all-rounder, Shadab Khan, should take on the T20I captaincy and replace the current captain.

The cricketer-turned-coach believes that, given Pakistan's disappointing results in recent times, Shadab's appointment as the team's leader would be beneficial.

“Shadab Khan could be Pakistan’s choice as captain in T20I cricket,” Ali was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Although Shadab has led Pakistan in Babar's absence during the recently-concluded three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in Sharjah, the team lost 2-1, resulting in Afghanistan's first-ever win against Pakistan across formats.

The Men in Green are now set to take on New Zealand in a five-match T20I series and five ODIs against New Zealand, which will take place between April 14 and May 7. The upcoming assignment will be a significant challenge for the Pakistan cricket team against an in-form Kiwi unit.

It is important to note that the team's performance on the field during the upcoming series against New Zealand will be crucial in determining Babar's future as captain. The team led by the 28-year old batter will need to demonstrate their capabilities and prove themselves in order to silence the critics and regain their position.
