England management has called upon all-rounder Moeen Ali to return to Test cricket with lead spinner Jack Leach out of the upcoming Ashes series. As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, Ali said that he might come out of retirement and rejoin the Test team in the Ashes.

Ali, who played his last red-ball game against India at The Oval in September 2021, has featured in 64 Tests, amassing 2914 runs and picking up 195 wickets.

Since then, he has shifted his focus to limited-overs cricket and was part of England's ICC T20 World Cup 2022 winning squad.

Replacing Leach will be tough for Ali, who has picked just 20 wickets in 11 Tests against Australia, while the former has claimed 45 wickets in 13 matches under the new Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes regime.

Speaking to Sky Sports, pacer Stuart Broad praised Ali's qualities and called him an ideal candidate to come into the setup.

"We know Mo is a phenomenal cricketer and someone who would fit into Stokes and Baz's philosophy beautifully. I don't know if he's being considered by the selectors or if he would consider red-ball cricket again. But he's a mighty fine cricketer."

Earlier, coach McCullum called up Ali to join England's Test squad for their 3-Test tour of Pakistan in 2022, which the off-spinner turned down citing a busy schedule.
