Mark Wood snared five Delhi Capitals wickets to engineer a huge win for Lucknow Super Giants in their opening IPL 2023 game. Notably, the English pacer achieved the feat in only his second IPL match, which also marked his first tournament appearance in five years.

Wood previously turned up for the CSK in 2018 for a solitary game, where he delivered an expensive wicketless spell.

The 33-year-old speedster cleaned up Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw and number three Mitchell Marsh with 147 kph thunderbolts in succession. The cricketer also curtailed Sarfaraz Khan’s stressful stay at the crease before returning to polish off the tail in the final over of the match.

He conceded just 14 runs off his four overs as the Super Giants registered their opening points of the competition with a huge 50-run win.

Notably, Wood’s spell marked the first five-wicket haul of the season, and also only the second five-fer to be taken by an Englishmen in IPL. Previously, former England all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas had claimed figures of 5-25 while playing for the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in 2012.

Playing only his second IPL game and first after a gap of five seasons, Wood may well have cemented his name as one of the first-choice overseas options of the Lucknow Super Giants.

KL Rahul and co. will now face the Chennai Super Kings for their next fixture on April 3 in Chennai.
