Ahead of the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, the Australian team received some unpleasant news about Mitchell Starc's unavailability for the opening Test against India at Nagpur.

Starc on Monday himself confirmed not being fully fit for the first Test and will be joining the squad ahead of the second Test, which is scheduled to be played in the national capital Delhi from February 17.

Starc was answering questions about his fitness when asked by the host on stage during the Australian Cricket Awards. Starc will only play the Delhi Test after clearing the fitness test.

Here's what Starc confirmed

"I am track..still a couple of weeks and then probably meet the guys in Delhi..after..hopefully, a first Test match win..get myself into training over there.”

The 33-year-old suffered a finger injury during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa last December. Starc has played 75 Tests, 107 ODIs, and 58 T20Is for Australia.

The Pat Cummins-led side are banking on spin bowling this tour, picking as many as four specialist spinners — Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson, Todd Murphy, and Ashton Agar — in their attack.

The fast-bowling duties will be shared between Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, with a toss-up between Lance Morris and Scott Boland, who are both on their first subcontinent trip. The first Test gets underway on February 9 at Nagpur.
