It is fair to say that Shubman Gill has started 2023 on a positive note. He has slammed three ODI centuries in the last four innings and has almost cemented his place as the first choice opener for the upcoming 50-over World Cup alongside Rohit Sharma.

With Shikhar Dhawan in patchy form and not in contention for the World Cup squad, Gill has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and even skipper Rohit Sharma is impressed with the maturity of the youngster.

Rohit lavishes praise

"He understands his batting, he paces his innings well," Rohit told reporters after their 90-run victory in Indore.

"That is what you want in one-day cricket. You want to go big, you want to go deep in your innings. He has shown that. He has got big hundreds."

"No matter how flat the pitch is, to get a double hundred is not easy. In that game, the next best score (by a team mate) was 34," Rohit said.

Talking about the third ODI, Gill and Rohit added 212 runs for the opening wicket that set the tone for a clean sweep. Hardik Pandya gave the finishing touches as 386 turned out to be. abit too much for New Zealand, despite a sublime century from Devon Conway.

With the ODIs done and dusted, the focus shifts towards the T20I series, which begins from January 27.
