"Don't think we need to look into SKY being vice-captain that much" - Gautam Gambhir

India start their 2023 by playing a white-ball series against Sri Lanka, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India appointed all-rounder Hardik Pandya as India T20I skipper in the absence of Rohit Sharma, while unexpectedly, Surya Kumar Yadav was named his deputy.

Former Indian skipper Gautam Gambhir feels that Yadav's accession as the team's vice-captain should not be looked into much.

Yadav, who had a phenomenal 2022 in the T20I format for India, according to Gambhir, should be considered for Tests as well.

As quoted by Sportskeeda, Gambhir adviced that the Indian management should not jiggle between captain and vice-captain once Rohit returns.

"I think Surya is one guy who has shown that you can actually be a T20 format player and from T20 you can go on to play one-day cricket and then probably be in the reckoning for the Test matches as well.

"I don't think we need to look into it that much because we have to wait and watch once Rohit comes into the T20 squad whether they are going to still continue with Hardik as the captain and Surya as the vice-captain."

Yadav ended 2022, as the leading run-getting in T20Is with 1,164 runs with two hundreds and nine fifties at an average of 46.56.

The first T20I gets underway today at Suryakumar's home ground in Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium.
