When we talk about the future of Indian cricket, one of the first names that comes to a fan's mind is that of Shubman Gill. With a great all-around game, brilliant technique and easy-to-the-eye style of play, Gill is one of the brightest prospects and predicted future great of the game. 8th September, 2024 marks the 25th birthday of this Indian batter. On this special day, we take a look back at one of the historical moments in his already-decorated career. 

On 18th January 2023, India faced off against New Zealand in the first of the three-match ODI series at Hyderabad. India batted first in the game, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opening the innings for the home team. The duo started steadily and stitched together a 60-run partnership before Sharma was dismissed. 

Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan, batting at number three and four, respectively, failed to fire. After this, Suyrakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya aided Gill while the opener went from strength to strength. He scored his century off 87 deliveries and started to accelerate from there.

Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian to score a double hundred in ODIs in style

In the 49th over of the innings, Gill hit Lockie Ferguson for three consecutive sixes to bring up a double hundred in ODI cricket. He reached the feat of the 145th delivery of his innings. The fact that his second set of 100 runs came in just 58 deliveries is a testament to the impact of his performance. The innings gains even more significance when you consider the scorecard and realize that no other batter crossed the 35 mark during the innings, underscoring the influence of Gill's innings on the game. 

Shubman Gill's knock ended in the 50th over when Shipley dismissed him of the second delivery. He finished with 208 runs off just 148 deliveries. 

As Gill reached the double hundred, he joined an elite group of just five Indians to achieve this feat. His name now stands among the 14 players in international cricket who have scored more than 200 runs in an innings, a testament to the rarity and significance of his achievement. He is also the youngest man score a ODI double Hundred.

New Zealand's response in the match

Returning to the game, New Zealand responded strongly to India's mammoth total of 349/8 in 50 overs. Despite being six down for 131 at one stage, they managed to reach 337, losing the game by just 12 runs. It was Michael Bracewell who orchestrated the Kiwis' dramatic comeback with a magnificent 140 off just 78 deliveries. Mitchell Santner also played a significant role, scoring 57 runs off 45 deliveries. Mohammad Siraj was the star with the ball for India, claiming four wickets for 46 runs in his 10 overs, adding to the game's excitement.
