Greg Chappell urges amending the dead ball rule

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell sought a change in the dead ball rule, citing why the bowler must be rewarded in case the ball hits the stumps on the free-hit delivery.

Although Virat Kohli brought the bacon home with his herculean effort in the humdinger versus Pakistan, a decisive moment in the thriller came in the form of a no-ball bowled by Mohammad Nawaz in the last over of the match.

On the free-hit delivery, Kohli swung his bat only for the ball to smash the stumps. While the ball is usually declared dead in such a scenario, it was not the case then, as it was a free-hit that allowed Kohli and Dinesh Karthik to run a three.

Chappell compared the incident with the overthrow saga of the 2019 ODI World Cup final that cost New Zealand the tournament.

Here's what Chappell wrote in his column for the Sydney Morning Herald

"I would review that rule to give the bowler credit for the dead ball if he is good enough to beat the bat and hit the stumps,

"As for the three byes off the stumps, one must ask: is that really what the tour conditions are trying to achieve? In a game where the balance is already well in favour of the batsman, what more is a bowler meant to do? If a bowler is good enough to bowl the perfect yorker, as Nawaz did, why does he need to be punished any further? (It is much like NZ being punished for accidental overthrows from the opponents bat which cost them the 50-over World Cup Final at Lord's in 2019)."

Meanwhile, after losing to India, Pakistan were also thumped by Zimbabwe as Babar Azam's men are now on the verge of an early exit in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
