England's newest pace addition Jamie Overton has his plans for a comeback into the playing XI derailed after suffering a stress fracture to his lower back, which could see his chances of featuring in The Ashes 2023 lessened.

Overton, who made his Test debut for the Three Lions last year against New Zealand in June, sat on the bench during England's recent tour of Pakistan, which the Ben Stokes-led side won 3-0.

As per the Surrey Cricket County Club statement, the 28-year-old has a lumbar spine stress fracture and has begun his rehabilitation.

Overton was due to play in the International League T20 (ILT20) for the Gulf Giants but had is stay cut short and returned to the UK ahead of the start of the competition.

Here's what Surrey stated

"Jamie, who had been in the UAE, has returned to the UK and further investigations have ... revealed that he has sustained a stress fracture of the lumbar spine. He will now begin a period of rehabilitation."

Overton played a monumental role in Surrey's County Championship winning season last year, where the lanky bowler picked up 34 wickets in 10 matches.

In his only Test for England, the Devon-born picked up 2 wickets but scored a match-turning 97 runs at Leeds in the first innings.
