The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium witnessed a thrilling innings from New Zealand all-rounder, Daryl Mitchell.

IND vs NZ: Mitchell validates his OneCricket promise with an unforgettable century

On Sunday, in the World Cup 2023 face-off against India, Mitchell scored a remarkable 130 off 127 deliveries. His innings, adorned with nine boundaries and five massive sixes, propelled New Zealand to a competitive total of 273 in their overs.

This performance gained significance given New Zealand's captain, Kane Williamson's absence due to an injury. In a recent exclusive interaction with OneCricket ahead of the World Cup, Mitchell had expressed his excitement and optimism about the team's chances. He shared the collective sentiment of the Kiwi camp, which was keen on embracing the challenge and experiencing Indian culture.

When probed about the impact of Williamson's potential absence, Mitchell had hinted that while his absence would be felt, it would pave the way for others to rise to the occasion and so he did.

The all-rounder had stated that such situations often become great opportunities for other players to showcase their mettle. He emphasized the team's enthusiasm about coming to India and participating in the World Cup.

“It’s just exciting to go to India for a World Cup. It doesn’t come around very often. Obviously with every four years so for us, as a group, really excited. Obviously, with Kane's injury, it's not ideal but he hasn't been ruled out yet hopefully, he can be there and if he’s not, it's another great opportunity for someone else to step up. For us as Blackcaps and Kiwis were really excited to get over to India and experience the culture and the country that it is and we are really looking forward to playing the World Cup,” said Mitchell.

Regarding New Zealand's underdog status entering the World Cup, Mitchell had conveyed that the team doesn't focus on such tags. Their primary goal is to represent their nation to the best of their abilities and enjoy the game.

According to him, the team believes in putting their best foot forward and playing with a cheerful spirit. For them, the journey and the process hold as much value as the result. He reckoned that the Kiwis' ethos is not just about winning trophies but also about how they approach and play the game.

“We are just a bunch of Kiwis going out there on the world stage and trying to do our best and represent our country and we all do everything we can that’s in our control to try and win games of cricket but at the same time we will deal with a smile on our face and get stuck and if it means we are there in the finals and winning trophies at the end then that will awesome because it doesn’t dictate who we are and how we go about cricket,” added the 32-year-old.
