Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Trevor Bayliss has said that New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson needs more time to get match ready and needs to spend more time in the nets.

"We just felt that Kane needed a little bit of extra time to get match fit and a little bit more time in the nets," Bayliss said after the game.

"He would have played in place of Jonny Bairstow obviously if that had occurred. But we aren't too perturbed about that, Jonny has been in form recently in white-ball cricket here in India. Kane will obviously come into calculations as the tournament unfolds."

Bayliss further said that Bairstow is fit enough to both open the innings and keep the wickets for the team at the same time. "Depending on fitness and form, we know Jonny can open the batting and keep as well. It gives us options but yes he has done well for England at number 4 recently,” he added.

SRH began the IPL 2021 campaign on a losing note after suffering a 10-run defeat against KKR in Chennai on Sunday.

Chasing 188 in 20 overs, SRH were restricted to 177/5. Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow scored individual fifties during the course but their efforts were not enough to take the team over the line.

Earlier, riding on opener Nitish Rana’s brilliant 80 off 56 deliveries and Rahul Tripathi’s half-century, KKR posted 187/6 in 20 overs. Wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik too chipped in with a quick 22* off 9 balls later.
