Former India all-rounder, Yuvraj Singh has decided that he will play the next few domestic seasons with his home state Punjab, saying that winning Championships for the state alongside Harbhajan Singh is his motive behind the move.
"The motivation is to help Punjab win championships. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), myself, we have won tournaments, but we haven't done it together for Punjab, so that was a big factor in my final call," Yuvraj told Cricbuzz.
But this is not the only reason. Yuvraj was never interested in making the comeback, it all started when he trained with four of Punjab's rising stars in the form of Shubman Gill, Prabhsimran Singh, Anmolpreet Singh and Abhishek Sharma for two months after the lifting up of first phase of lockdown.
Describing the sequence of events Yuvraj, 38 said, "I enjoyed spending time with these youngsters, and talking to them about various aspects of the game, I realized that they were able to pick up various things that I was telling them. I also spent some time in the nets."
"I was pleasantly surprised at how well I was hitting the ball even though I hadn't held a bat for a really long time," he added.
Further continuing, the Chandigarh born divulged the details of how he was persuaded to come out of retirement. "Mr Puneet Bali, the secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association, approached me after one of the sessions and asked me if I would reconsider coming out of retirement.
"If I can contribute in any way to their (young Punjab players) development and to the development of Punjab cricket, then that will be wonderful. After all, playing for Punjab is what paved the way for my international career," Yuvraj said.
Yuvraj, who is yet to hear from the Board on the letter he has sent seeking permission, concluded the interview by saying, "As things stand now, I will be playing only T20s if I get the nod. But who knows, let's see."
