Australia will be without their captain Meg Lanning for the upcoming Women's Ashes 2023 series next month in England as she will miss the tour due to a medical issue. Lanning returned to active cricket in the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 after taking a break due to mental health.

In Lanning's absence, keeper-batter Alyssa Healy has been named as skipper, with Tahlia McGrath working as her deputy. This will be the second time Lanning will miss the Ashes series, after the 2017-18 edition, where she was unavailable due to a shoulder injury.

As per Cricket Australia (CA) statement, Shawn Flegler, Head of Performance for women's cricket, stated that the five-time ICC title-winning captain would undergo work with medical staff at her home and is eying a return soon.

Here's what CA said

"It's an unfortunate setback for Meg and she's obviously disappointed to have been ruled out of the Ashes; it's a significant series for the team and she'll be missed, but she understands the need to put her health first."

"Meg will remain at home where she will continue to work with medical staff with the aim to return to playing as soon as possible. We ask that Meg's privacy is respected at this time."

Before the Ashes, Lanning led Delhi Capitals in the inaugural season of Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023, taking them into the final, only to lose to eventual winner Mumbai Indians.

CA are yet to name a replacement for Lanning, with the one-off Test between Australia and England starting on June 22 at Nottingham. The Test will be followed by a three-match One-Day International and T20I series as well.

In 6 Tests, the 31-year-old has scored 345 runs while scoring 4,602 and 3,405 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively.
