MS Dhoni, who is captaining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has taken them to playoffs for the 12th time. One reason for their success has been the rise of pacer Matheesha Pathirana who has managed to pick up wickets consistently in the death with his unorthodox action.

Previously, Lasith Malinga countered MS Dhoni's statement that Pathirana should stay away from red-ball cricket as his action is injury-prone. Malinga said that playing Test cricket would only make him better as his skill and strength would improve, also he himself hasn't faced any serious injury issues with this kind of an action.

Now, another Sri Lankan legend Chaminda Vaas has spoken on the matter and backed Dhoni's view on Pathirana by remarking that Matheesha should be preserved since he has a difficult action which can cause problems in future.

“I was working for Sri Lanka Cricket one year back and I mentioned the same thing to them. A person like Mathi should be preserved. If he played all the formats he would not survive because of the way he bowls. He doesn’t have an easy action, a unique action which is very strenuous. So fitness will come into the picture. Bowling four overs is OK, if you bowl more than that then the problem will arise, like Dhoni said. I totally agree.”

Matheesha Pathirana would next be seen playing for CSK when they take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in the first Qualifier slated to be held at Chepauk on 23rd May.
