Delhi Capitals Survive Livingstone Blitz To Spoil Punjab's Party

Delhi Capitals 213-2 in 20 overs [Rilee Rossouw 82* (37), Prithvi Shaw 54 (38); Sam Curran 2-36 (4)] beat Punjab Kings 198/8 in 20 overs [Liam Livingstone 94 (48), Atharva Taide 55 (42); Anrich Nortje 2-36 (4), Ishant Sharma 2-36 (3)] by 15 runs.

As Punjab Kings (PBKS) played at their new home venue in Dharamsala, it did pan out well for them. The likes of Rilee Rossouw, Prithvi Shaw and David Warner starred with the bat as Delhi Capitals (DC) were helped to a 15-run victory in the 64th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

Rossouw exposes Dhawan's captaincy blunders

Opting to bowl first, Punjab Kings excelled in the first half of the powerplay, keeping the DC openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw on their toes. However, the duo forced the PBKS bowlers to the backfoot as by the end of the first six overs, their counterattack took the Capitals to 61-0.

Shaw, who made his return to the XI, did not take much time to get going and scored a scintillating fifty. Delhi's skipper Warner too felt natural in his stroke play in his 31-ball 46.

Their 94-run partnership was broken by Sam Curran, however, it marked the arrival of Rossouw, who was at his fluent best.

Rossouw carried on with the momentum and bettered DC's innings with his six-laden 37-ball 82 which took his side to 213-2 in 20 overs.

While his heroic effort deserves every bit of the praise, it is worthy of a point that he was aided by the fact that Shikhar Captain bowled left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar for three overs in the last five and did not complete Arshdeep Singh's quota.

Livingstone's special not enough for Punjab

Chasing 214 runs, Punjab Kings only had Liam Livingstone leaving a positive contribution.

While Dhawan fell for a golden duck, Prabhsimran Singh struggled through his 22-run knock. Atharva Taide scored a 42-ball 55 before getting retired-out but it did not matter for PBKS much in the context of the match. Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan's failure added further to Punjab's woes.

With 67 runs needed in 21 deliveries, it was down to Livingstone to do the impossible. He did seem to be moving on the right path, taking down Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar as the two overs yielded 20 and 21 runs respectively. But it was too much to ask for and as expected, the Englishman's 48-ball 94 ended up in a 15-run loss.
