Mohsin Khan’s Final Over Heroics Justifies Stoinis’ Blitz as LSG beat MI In A Thriller

Lucknow Super Giants halted Mumbai Indians run-chase juggernaut in match number 63 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season in Lucknow. Defending 178 against the chase masters, the hosts bowlers defied recent reputation and a rampaging Tim David in a run-scoring affair, as Krunal Pandya and co. claimed two crucial points towards the business end of the league stage.

Earlier in the game, LSG’s Australian-based all-rounder Marcus Stoinis had single-handedly boosted them up to 177 with a career-best 89*.

Stoinis Clubs 89* to Charge LSG up to 177

The Lucknow Super Giants openers, Deepak Hooda and Quinton de Kock, failed to get going in the powerplay as the two were cheaply removed by Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla respectively. Moreover, number three batter Prerak Mankad was dismissed for a first-ball duck to become Behrendorff’s second scalp of the evening.

With LSG reeling at 35-3 from 6.1 overs, captain Krunal Pandya tactically kept the scoreboard ticking in his 82-run stand with Marcus Stoinis. Pandya scored 49 before retiring hurt at the end of 16th over, thus making way for Stoinis to go berserk in the death overs.

The burly Australian clubbed an undefeated 89 from just 47 deliveries to mark his IPL best score. Nicholas Pooran at the other end was reduced to a mere spectator as Stoinis’ carnage at the death accounted for 54 runs in the final three overs to help the LSG surge to 177-3.

Mumbai Indians slip in final over to concede rare run-chase defeat

Mumbai Indians, who have already chased down 200-plus targets thrice this season, got off to a flier courtesy of openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. After captain Sharma’s dismissal, Kishan raced to his 50 before being eventually dismissed by Ravi Bishnoi for a 39-ball 59. Bishnoi had also accounted for Sharma’s scalp earlier in the innings as the ace spinner finished his spell with 2-26.

Suryakumar Yadav returned with a rare failure in a run-chase this season as the Mumbai Indians veteran became the first of two Yash Thakur victims of the evening, sharing the tag with Vishnu Vinod.

In the penultimate over, Tim David belted Naveen-ul-Haq for 19 runs to bring down the equation to 11 runs required from the final over. With a well-settled David at the crease alongside fellow Australian batting barbarian Cameron Green, the two failed to take flight in the final over against an accurate Mohsin Khan.

Khan contained the dynamic duo to just six in the final six balls as LSG claimed a thrilling home win by five runs, thus strengthening their chances of securing a spot at the playoffs. With Pandya’s team comfortably placed at number three on the points table, Mumbai Indians hold on to the fourth spot with both teams having a league game left in the bank.
