Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has urged pacer Jofra Archer to concentrate on franchise cricket if he wants to extend his playing career.

Pietersen's comments came on a day when Archer faced another setback after the England & Wales Cricket Board confirmed that the Barbados-born cricketer has been ruled out of the 2023 English summer due to yet another elbow injury.

Archer has struggled with his troublesome elbow for two years now. He made his return to competitive cricket earlier this year, featuring in two white-ball series against South Africa and Bangladesh.

He also featured in IPL 2023 for the Mumbai Indians but couldn't play on a regular basis before eventually being ruled out of the competition.

On Tuesday, the ECB confirmed that Archer will not be available for the entire English summer, including the high-profile Ashes series.

Writing in his column for Betway, Pietersen said that Archer's England career may well be over, and that he should now pick and choose a few franchise tournaments in order to extend his playing career.

"I'm gutted for Jofra (Archer). Absolutely gutted. I think this will probably end his journey with English cricket," Pietersen wrote in his blog on Betway.

"I know that there are reports around a franchise contract, and that would be the smartest thing for him to do now. Take six months to recover, select a few tournaments to play, and bowl at the speed of light for a few months of the year. He would earn good money and still have a career in the game," he added.

Archer made his international debut in the summer of 2019, and since then, he has represented England in 13 Tests, 21 ODIs and 15 T20Is.
