I Called Anushka and I Cried: Virat Kohli After his Maiden T20I Century in Asia Cup 2022

From 2016 to 2019, Virat Kohli was at the peak of his power in international cricket. He hardly put a foot wrong and was the undisputed king that ruled his kingdom.

However, from 2020 onwards, Kohli witnessed a downward spiral in his career, wherein runs were hard to come by. He struggled across formats and had to relinquish his captaincy in all three formats.

However, the turning point came when he had a dismal tour of England in 2022 and the former India captain decided to take a one-month break from the game. He eventually returned for the Asia Cup 2022 and was the top run-scorer for India in the tournament.

Moreover, Kohli broke his three year century drought with a magnificent ton against Afghanistan, which was his 71st international century, and his first in the shortest format of the game.

In a recent interview with Puma's ‘Let There Be Sport’ programme, Kohli talked about the moment he reached his maiden T20I century against Afghanistan and what went inside him at the moment.

“The ball before I got to the 100, is the time I felt, oh I am on 94, I could probably get this. And the next ball went for six. But the thing is that as soon as I got the 100, I laughed so hard. I was like, 'main iske liye ro raha tha 2 saal se? (Was I cribbing about this for 2 years?),” Kohli said.

He further added: "Like just for this 2 seconds, I let myself go through that? That moment happened, it ended. Next day, the sun goes up again. It wasn't going to be forever. It's not like I scored this 100, and I live this moment for the rest of my life. It was so funny, I laughed so hard. I was like, this is all that it."

The former India captain also stated that once the dust settled in, he cried while talking to his wife, Anushka Sharma.

“Not in that moment, but when I spoke to Anushka... (there were tears),” Kohli said.

At the moment, Kohli is playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
