On Thursday, International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a change in the ODI rankings, which saw Australia climb to the number 1 spot ahead of Pakistan and India. The annual update in the ICC rankings also saw the Men In Yellow better their rating from 113 to 118, pushing them up to the top and leaving behind Pakistan (116) and India (115).

The rankings were adjusted considering all completed matches before May 2022 weighing upto 50%, whilst the subsequent matches were valued at 100%.

Earlier this year, Australia earned a hard-fought series victory against India at home by a margin of 2-1. Following their series win, Australia surged to the number 1 spot in ODI cricket. Whereas, India, on the other hand, slipped to the number 2 position in the points table. The Kangaroos maintained their dominance briefly before Pakistan spoiled their party.

Before the commencement of the ODI series between Pakistan and New Zealand, the Men In Green ranked 5th in the ODI rankings table with a dismal rating of 106. But the Babar Azam led side registered an impressive series victory against the Kiwis, crushing them by an unassailable margin of 4-0 with still one game remaining in the series.

At this point, Pakistan dethroned Australia from the top and clinched the number 1 position in the rankings table. They now have a rating of 113.48, surpassing Australia (113.286) and India (112.638). The Pakistan camp was very jubilant after achieving such an extraordinary feat. This was the first time the Men In Green moved up to the top rankings table since the ICC formally accepted the rankings in January 2005.

But the joys of ecstasy were soon about to come to an abrupt close as Pakistan could not hold on to their numero uno position for too long. In less than 48 hours, Pakistan slipped to the number two position following their 47-run defeat against New Zealand in the final ODI. This defeat allowed the Men In Yellow to reclaim the top spot in the ICC Men's ODI Rankings Table.

India (115), sitting at number 3 spot, are well ahead of New Zealand, England, South Africa, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who have directly qualified for the World Cup. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka and West Indies will be a part of the qualifying tournament, which will be held in Zimbabwe in June-July.
