Chennai Super Kings: 167/8 in 20 overs [Shivam Dube 25 (12), Ruturaj Gaikwad 24 (18); Mitchell Marsh 3/18 (3), Axar Patel 2/27 (4)] beat Delhi Capitals: 140/8 in 20 overs [Rilee Rossouw 35 (37), Manish Pandey 27 (29); Matheesha Pathirana 3/37 (4), Deepak Chahar 2/28 (3)] by 27 Runs.

Delhi Capitals had their newfound winning run disrupted by the Chennai Super Kings in match number 55 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season.

Batting second, David Warner and co. failed to get going in the run-chase to eventually fall 27 runs short of their target. Meanwhile, a professional CSK unit displayed an exemplary all-round performance, with each player contributing towards their big win.

CSK slams competitive 167 with a 25-run top score

CSK’s in-form openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway raced to 32 in the first four overs, before the latter was trapped in front by Capitals’ in-form spinner Axar Patel. The left-arm bowler also dismissed Gaikwad a while later for 24.

As many as six CSK batters scored in the range of 20-25, with the highest of the innings being a mere 25 listed by Shivam Dube. MS Dhoni’s nine-ball 20 provided the death overs charge, as CSK finished at 167-8.

Meanwhile, Capitals all-rounder Mitchell Marsh snared three wickets in the innings, including that of Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Dube.

Capitals fails to recover from early strikes

Delhi Capitals captain and opener David Warner registered yet another duck this season, to become the first of Deepak Chahar’s two victims of the evening. The speedster also removed Warner’s partner Phil Salt, just at a time when the Englishman was threatening to speed up the scoring rate.

A terrible mix-up between Manish Pandey and Mitchell Marsh, coupled with some smart work from Ajinkya Rahane curtailed the Australian all-rounder’s stay at the crease. Later, Pandey formed a run-a-ball 59-run stand with Rilee Rossouw, as the two constituted Capitals’ only fight from the run-chase.

After Chahar’s sublime opening gambit and two self-inflicted runouts by batter’s mix-ups, Matheesha Pathirana with three crucial strikes inflicted the most damage to the Capitals. Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav swung their bats a bit in the death, only to see their side fall 27 runs short of their task.

While a win for David Warner and co. would have lifted them higher up in the IPL 2023 points table, the huge defeat continues to keep them at the bottom. On the other hand, the Super Kings inched a step closer in securing a spot in the playoffs, as they registered their seventh win in 12 matches.
