Former Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag, has called for a considerable amelioration in the conduct of Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir following an aggressive confrontation between the two former teammates after the IPL 2023 match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Kohli and Gambhir, who have a long-standing history of animosity, engaged in an unrestrained verbal altercation that was unpleasant to witness on national television. The altercation has since become a subject of national discussion.

Sehwag admitted to not being aware of the post-match events between Kohli and Gambhir and expressed his disappointment upon learning about it through social media. He believes that both teams should conduct themselves in a dignified manner, with the losing team accepting their defeat graciously and the winning team celebrating without indulging in unnecessary bickering.

As icons of Indian cricket, the former cricketer emphasized the importance of Kohli and Gambhir being mindful of their behaviour as they serve as role models for millions of young fans.

“What happened wasn't right. The loser should quietly accept defeat and walk away and the winning team should celebrate. Why did they need to say anything to each other. I always say one thing, that these guys are icons of the country. If they do or say anything, millions of kids follow them and probably think 'If my icon has done this, I would too'. So if they keep these things in mind, they would limit such incidents," said Sehwag while speaking on Cricbuzz.

The legendary batter went on to suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should consider imposing bans on players who engage in such behavior.

"If the BCCI decides to ban anyone, then maybe such incidents will happen rarely or not take place at all," suggested the 44-year-old.

The Indian veteran also expressed his concern that players' actions can have a negative impact on young fans and that offensive language can be easily interpreted by lip-reading, as his own children could attest.
