Veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has shot down the suggestion of bringing back Ajinkya Rahane in the middle-order for the 2023 50-over World Cup.

Rahane, 35, recently made a comeback to the Indian Test team after he was included in the 15-men squad for the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia.

With the likes of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer out of the set-up due to their respective injuries, there is likely a vacancy in the middle-order, but Gavaskar feels that even if that's the case, the management should give opportunities to youngsters who are currently doing well in the domestic circuit.

He suggested the names of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Here's what Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports:

"Good idea but no not at the moment. Rahane in a Test match yes, but white-ball somebody else, some youngster who is doing well. like Gaikwad or Yashasvi. There is no place at top but they can get a place in the middle."

Rahane has exceeded expectations in this IPL with his amazing strokeplay, and former Indian seamer, S Sreesanth feels that the formers' return won't surprise him at all.

"I will not be surprised" said Sreesanth.

Rahane represented India in 90 ODIs between 2011-18, in which he managed 2962 runs at 35.26 apiece.
