The Fair Play Award is given to a team(s) who end their IPL campaign with the best fair play record. The award is presented at the conclusion of the season. After each match, the on-field umpires together with the third umpire assess the performance of both teams and provide rating on the basis of certain parameters.
A total of ten points per match can be awarded, out of which four points are given on the basis of team's complaince with the "spirit of the game" as per the opinion of the umpires.
The other three parameters are based on the respect displayed towards the opposition, the laws of cricket and the umpires. Each of these three parameters represent 2 points.
If a team has got two points in the criterion, its performance is considered as "good", whereas getting one or zero points indicates that its performance is "average" or "bad" respectively.
The winner is decided as per the average rating attained per match. In order to get to this figure, the total number of points is divided by the number of games played by the team throughout the season.
Chennai Super Kings have had the most amount of success in winning the Fair Play Award claiming a total 6 awards; most by any team. (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015).
