Rajasthan Royals: 212/7 in 20 overs [Yashasvi Jaiswal 124 (62), Jos Buttler 18 (19); Arshad Khan 3/39 (3), Piyush Chawla 2/34 (4)] lost to Mumbai Indians: 214-4 in 19.3 overs [Suryakumar Yadav 55 (29), Tim David 45* (14); Ravichandran Ashwin 2/27 (4), Sandeep Sharma 1/35 (4)]

Mumbai Indians overcame a daunting Rajasthan Royals total in match number 42 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The contest, marking the 1,000th one in IPL history, turned out to be a high-scoring celebrated affair at the Wankhede Stadium as both sides slammed 200-plus totals.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record-breaking innings charge up RR

Yashasvi Jaiswal played the aggressor act in his 72-run opening partnership with dynamic Englishman Jos Buttler. While the latter departed back to the pavilion with just a run-a-ball 18 to his name, Jaiswal carried his run-scoring juggernaut with an imperial 124 in double-quick time.

The youngster whacked a career-best 124, thus charting his maiden century in IPL cricket. The opener blasted eight sixes and 16 boundaries across the Wankhede turf, and his innings charged up the Royals total to 212-7.

Remarkably, Jaiswal’s knock made up 58 percent of his side’s total, as none of his batting teammates managed to outscore Buttler’s mere 18. Captain Sanju Samson and all-rounder Jason Holder barely crossed the single-digits, as most of them struggled against Mumbai Indians young pacer Arshad Khan.

Khan bowled three overs to claim 3-39, while spin ace Piyush Chawla struck twice in his four-over spell.

Suryakumar Yadav leads MI rebellion in remarkable win

Milestone man and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was removed for just three by Royals new-ball pacer Sandeep Sharma. Ishan Kishan scored a sluggish 28 in the innings, and formed a 62-run stand with Cameron Green.

Meanwhile, Green himself employed enterprising stroke-play in the run-chase, hammering 44 from just 26 balls. Suryakumar Yadav followed up with a 29-ball 55, and his tactical support was later backed by Tilak Varma and Tim David in the death overs.

While Varma scored an undefeated 29, David bludgeoned a 14-ball 45*, including three match-winning sixes in the final over of the contest against Jason Holder.

Legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick-of-the-bowlers from the Royals camp, as he finished with figures of 2-27 off his four overs.

Mumbai Indians’ remarkable run-chase against the Royals has now lifted them up to number seven on the IPL 2023 points table. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson and co. are comfortable placed at number three despite the eye-opening defeat.
