'He Hasn't Been Very Consistent at All' - Shane Watson on MI Skipper Rohit Sharma

Delhi Capitals assistant coach and former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson is flummoxed at Mumbai Indians' captain Rohit Sharma's poor showing with the bat in the past few seasons of the Indian Premier League.

The most successful skipper in the history of the IPL, Rohit hasn't been able to replicate his captaincy credentials with his bat for a prolonged period in the cash-rich league in the last 5 years.

And, as MI's performance has nosedived since the start of the last season, the spotlight is well and truly on Rohit the batter.

What's made things worse is Sharma has struggled to get going in the ongoing season as well. In 7 outings, the Indian skipper has breached the 30-run mark just a couple of times.

And, Watson can't wrap his head around it.

Here's what Shane Watson told the Grade Cricketer:

"When it comes to Rohit Sharma, we have seen him at his best, but in the last four or five years of the IPL, he hasn't been very consistent at all. It is hard to get your head around it because he is such a gun batter when he is going, taking on all the best bowlers in the world in all different conditions."

Watson further added that since Rohit is also now India's all-format captain, he has a lot more on his plate than he used to previously, and one can understand why he is "mentally fatigued"

"It is a huge challenge to manage your mental energy. International cricketers around the world do play a lot of cricket, but Indian cricketers play it non-stop all year round. With Rohit Sharma now being captain of India now as well, it's even more on his plate. If he is a bit mentally fatigued, you can see why."

In the 7 innings of IPL 2023, Rohit has managed 181 runs at an average of 25.86 with a strike rate of 135.07 with a solitary 50-plus score, and MI fans will hope that their skipper finally finds his form in the second half.
