Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders: 200-5 (20) (Jason Roy 56 (29), Nitish Rana 48 (21) Wanindu Hasaranga 2-24, Vijaykumar Vyshak 2-41) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 179-8 (20) (Virat Kohli 54 (37), Mahipal Lomror 34 (18) Varun Chakravarthy 3-27, Andre Russell 2-29)

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) shrugged off their recent record to overcome RCB in match number 36 of the IPL 2023 season. Visiting Bengaluru for their eighth fixture of the tournament, the Nitish Rana-led side hammered 200 upfront courtesy of Jason Roy’s sublime opening blitz and captain’s thunderous middle-overs charge.

Fresh from four successive defeats this season, the KKR openers launched a high-flying start to their innings. Narayan Jagadeesan played a supporting role to his partner Jason Roy’s attacking stroke-play. The two formed an 83-run stand at the top, with Roy striking 56 runs from just 29 deliveries.

The top-order blitz allowed captain Nitish Rana to sustain KKR’s aggression. The KKR captain clubbed a 21-ball 48, and his innings was backed by a finishing flurry from IPL cult hero Rinku Singh. The visitors eventually charted 200-5, despite taking ace RCB spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for just 24 off his four overs.

Mohammed Siraj, on the other hand, claimed Andre Russell’s wicket to regain his ‘Purple Cap’ from previous holder Rashid Khan.

Virat Kohli plays lone hand in RCB’s uphill attempt

In a 200-plus run chase, RCB lost ‘Orange Cap’ holder Faf du Plessis for just 17 within the powerplay. Shahbaz Ahmed and Glenn Maxwell also departed cheaply soon after, leaving the run-scoring onus up to Virat Kohli.

Kohli tried his best, notched up his fifth half-century of the season before an excellent grab at deep midwicket ended his rebellious stay at the crease. Mahipal Lomror launched three sixes and formed a 55-run partnership with his captain before becoming one of three Varun Chakravarthy’s victim of the evening.

Chakravarthy finished his spell with 3-27, while young Suyash Sharma struck twice off his four overs. Andre Russell also claimed two wickets in the innings, including a game-changing one of Kohli.

KKR’s 21-run win has now elevated them to number seven on the IPL 2023 points table, thus displacing Mumbai Indians on the merit of a better NRR.
