In the world of sports, every game has its own set of benchmarks and milestones that players strive to achieve, and cricket is certainly no exception.

Scoring a century is the ultimate achievement for a batter in cricket, and it is a testament to their mental strength, resilience, and perseverance. Whether it's the traditional format of Test cricket or the shorter versions of the game, reaching the three-digit mark is always a special moment for a batter.

Over the years, we have witnessed some incredible batting masterclasses from some of the world's best cricketers. On that note, let's take a closer look at the players who have scored the most international centuries of all time: 

1. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar, the greatest cricketer to have ever graced the game, sits atop the list of players with the most centuries across all formats. He finished his illustrious career with a total of 100 international centuries, with 51 coming in Test matches and 49 in ODIs while he did not have as many opportunities to score centuries in T20Is.  

In a career that spanned over two decades, from 1989 to 2013, Sachin Tendulkar scored a total of 34,357 runs in 782 innings across all formats of the game, making him the highest-scoring batter in the history of sport.

When it comes to the art of crafting centuries after centuries in cricket, Sachin Tendulkar may have set the bar high, but Virat Kohli is not far behind. With a total of 80 international centuries, including 50 in ODIs, 29 in Tests, and one in T20Is, Kohli is on his way to approaching the record of his cricketing idol Tendulkar, who has scored 100 centuries. 

3. Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting, a former captain of the Australian cricket team and one of the most explosive batters from his country, is third on the list with 71 centuries in 560 matches played during his glorified career from 1995 to 2012. He scored 41 centuries in Test matches and 30 in One Day Internationals, but he did not score any centuries in T20Is. With a career spanning 17 years, Ponting scored an incredible 27,483 runs.

4. Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara, the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer stands fourth in this list. He scored 63 international centuries during his illustrious career, which lasted from 2000 to 2015. Sangakkara played all three formats of the game and excelled in Test cricket, where he scored 38 centuries while he has 25 tons in ODIs. He failed to touch the three-digit figure in the shortest format of the game despite playing 56 T20Is. His 594-match career has seen him amass a staggering 28,016 runs. 

5. Jacques Kallis

Jacques Kallis, the legendary South African cricketer, is ranked fifth on the list of players with the most international centuries to their name. During his sterling career from 1995 to 2014, Kallis scored a remarkable 62 centuries, including 45 in Test cricket and 17 in ODIs. His overall tally of runs across all formats stands at 25,534. 

While Jacques Kallis played 25 T20 internationals in his career, he fell short of scoring a century in any of those. Nonetheless, he did record five half-centuries in the shortest format of the game. 

6. Hashim Amla

Hashim Amla, the South African cricketing giant, is considered one of the all-time greats of the game, and his numbers justify why. Over his 14 years of outstanding cricket, Amla has scored 55 international centuries across formats, with 28 centuries in Test cricket and 27 in ODIs. He stands sixth in the list of players with the most international centuries. With 18,672 runs in 349 matches, he has had a prolific career both in red-ball and white-ball cricket. 

7. Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene, another cricketing legend from Sri Lanka, ranks at number seven in terms of the highest number of international centuries. Spanning from 1997 to 2015, his stellar career includes a total of 54 centuries across all formats of the game, with 34 in Tests, 19 in ODIs, and one in T20s. 

8. Brian Lara

No discussion about international century-makers is complete without mentioning the legendary West Indian batter Brian Lara. He holds the eighth position on the list with a tally of 53 international centuries, scored across formats during his career between 1990 and 2007. 

A look at his runs and matches played will leave anyone surprised - 34 Test centuries in 131 Test matches, and 63 international ODI centuries in 299 matches. He was labelled as a nightmare with the willow for bowlers, and these figures only justify that. 

9. David Warner

Arguably one of the greatest player to have played for the Australian team, David Warner is a run-machine and has proven his worth across formats. The dynamic southpaw has 49 international centuries to his name in a career that has spanned nearly 15 years. He has 26 hundreds in Tests, 22 in ODI cricket and a solitary century in T20Is.

Warner has garnered 18,817 runs across formats in international cricket and has recently retired from the Test format.

10. Rohit Sharma

India's captain, Rohit Sharma has certainly churned up truckloads of runs in the last few years. For someone who had a stuttering international career at the start, Rohit has picked up the pace and now has 48 international centuries to his name, with the latest coming against England.

The Indian stalwart has 12 centuries in Tests, 31 tons in ODIs and a record 5-centuries in T20I format.
