'Banish all those bad memories': Atherton's advice to Warner Ahead Of The Ashes 2023

Despite criticism and calls to be dropped, Cricket Australia (CA) included David Warner in their Test squads for the upcoming World Test Championship Final and The Ashes 2022 series. Warner has been picked for the first two Ashes Tests in England, which begins June 16.

Ahead of the marquee series between arch-rivals England and Australia, former Three Lions captain Michael Atherton has adviced Warner to let go of his 'baggages' of the previous Ashes tour.

In the 2019 Ashes series in England, Warner became Stuart Broad's bunny, getting the opener out as many as seven times in a space of 104 balls. Overall, Broad has got the better of Warner 14 times.

Warner, 36, averaged just 9.5 on the last Ashes tour to England, scoring 95 runs in five Tests.  

Speaking to SKY Sports, Atherton explained that Australia wants this Ashes to be Warner's last hurrah, with the likes of Marcus Harris waiting in the wings.

Here's what Atherton said

"I think the problem for David Warner is, of course, his form has not been good and his form in the last Ashes [in England], when he came unstuck against Stuart Broad, he averaged, I think, 9.5 in what was a pretty horrific series for him,” he stated.

So he has got to banish all those bad memories and recent memories of England and try and finish strongly.”

The first gets underway at Edgbaston, three days after the completion of the WTC Final against India.
