Led by MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings had an underwhelming start to their IPL 2023 campaign, incurring a five-wicket defeat to the defending champions Gujarat Titans in the tournament opener. However, they were quick to bounce back, recording clinical victories against LSG and MI.
Although the yellow army were handed a gut-wrenching three-run defeat by RR, they showcased their prowess against Royal Challengers Bangalore, securing an eight-run win in a high-scoring cliff-hanger.
Being a team with incredible batting depth, CSK have primarily relied on their batters to succeed in the tournament so far. However, with Tushar Deshpande showcasing his skills across phases and Matheesha Pathirana being accurate with his yorkers, they might fancy their chances even if they defend against SRH's star-studded batting unit.

On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad have blown hot and cold in the IPL this season. After starting their campaign with two successive defeats, Aiden Markram-led SRH bounced back remarkably, registering thumping victories over Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
However, their two-match winning streak was broken by the five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who left them shattered in front of their home crowd.
Despite having a power-packed batting unit, SRH have failed to showcase their batting prowess in most of the matches. Although Aiden Markram has lit up the stage at times with his nonchalant hitting, the abysmal form of Mayank Agarwal and inconsistency of Harry Brook and Rahul Tripathi have let them down.
On the other hand, their bowling unit led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen has been patchy, failing to strike at crucial junctures. With Umran Malik being benched, Mayank Markande has been their lone attacking option with the ball in the middle overs. So, if they continue fielding the same team, the orange army must put up a better batting performance to pass the CSK challenge with flying colours.

Pitch Report: The surface in Chennai has been a tad two-paced in the tournament so far. There will also be some turn for the spinners, with the black soil forming the core element of the track. However, as both SRH and CSK are batting-heavy sides, they would prefer to bowl first and chase the total.
