In a historic moment that marked the dawn of a new era in cricket, Brendon McCullum's thunderous unbeaten knock of 158 runs off just 73 balls on this day, in 2008, in the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL), remains etched in the annals of cricketing history as a defining moment.
The then largely untested T20 format of the game, which was still finding its feet amidst the established and popular Test and ODI formats, was about to witness a seismic shift in the dynamics of the game.
The IPL, was set to change the face of cricket forever, and McCullum's innings was the catalyst that set the ball rolling. Playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, McCullum announced his arrival in grand style, setting the tone for the league's future success.
In a scene straight out of a cricketing fairytale, McCullum's sluggish start in the first-ever match of the IPL quickly transformed into a scintillating display of power-hitting that left the opposition reeling.
The right-handed stumper turned on the heat against the likes of Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Jacques Kallis, and Sunil Joshi, unleashing a breathtaking assault that stunned the crowd.

KKR posted a colossal total of 222 for 3, with the Kiwi veteran's contribution amounting to more than two-thirds of the total runs. RCB, in reply, had no answer to KKR's dominance, and were bowled out for just 82 runs in 15.1 overs.
The swashbuckling batter’s ferocious display of strokeplay became the gold standard for all future IPL batters, and the competition witnessed no KKR batter hit another century for nearly 15 years until Venkatesh Iyer's exceptional knock against the Mumbai Indians recently on April 16, 2023.
