As Punjab Kings (PBKS) regular skipper for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 sat down on the bench because of a shoulder niggle, it paved the way for Sam Curran to take over the role temporarily.

Curran captained the Kings in the match versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and himself delivered an extraordinary performance with the ball, ending up the first innings of the match after bagging an incredible record.

The pacer completed his four overs with the figures of 3-31 which happens to be the best for any bowler on his debut captaincy game in the IPL.

Best bowling returns on IPL captaincy debut:

  • 3/31 - Sam Curran (PBKS) vs LSG, Lucknow, today
  • 2/21 - Sourav Ganguly (KKR) vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2008
  • 2/25 - Anil Kumble (RCB) vs PBKS, Durban, 2009
  • 2/36 - Harbhajan Singh (MI) vs RCB, Mumbai WS, 2008

After dismissing Marcus Stoinis in the 18th over, Curran followed up with two more wickets in the form of Krishnappa Gowtham and Yudhvir Singh Charak in the 20th.

He was helped by the other bowlers in restricting LSG to 159/8.

In the run-chase, Punjab lost their openers early. However, Matthew Short's 22-ball 34 and Sikandar Raza half century along with Shahrukh Khan's cameo took Punjab Kings over the line.
