The Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers held off a raging Rinku Singh to register a 23-run win in a run-fest thriller against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The win marked their second in succession as they aim to reboot their IPL 2023 campaign with winning ways.
Earlier, the SRH camp had sustained big defeats to Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants in their initial two games of the season.
Aiden Markram hails ‘reliable’ Bhuvi after win in high-scoring thriller
SRH captain Aiden Markram praised his new-ball paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar for keeping a lid on KKR’s scoring rate in the run-chase. The speedster conceded just 29 runs off his spell, and dismissed KKR opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the opening over of the innings.
After the match, Markram said:
“Was always going to be a tight game. With their firepower we knew the total wasn't safe. Our bowlers showed character. He's Mr. Reliable for sure (Bhuvneshwar Kumar). Certainly helps the dressing room. It's a great bunch of guys,”
Markram, who himself listed a 26-ball 50 in the SRH innings, praised his opener Harry Brook for setting up a run-scoring foundation at the top of the order. Brook whacked an unbeaten ton against the KKR bowlers in front of a packed Eden Gardens, to register his maiden fifty-plus score in IPL.
When asked about his own innings, the SRH skipper acknowledged the scintillating powerplay start provided by the young Englishman. The South African cricketer said:
“I was fortunate that we got off to a great start. Makes life easier. We bat quite deep so you get the freedom. We all know Harry - his ability we have seen. Giving a player like that the time to face a lot of balls.”
After their big win over KKR, the ‘Orange Army’ finds itself at number seven on the IPL 2023 points table. They will now face the Mumbai Indians on April 18 in Hyderabad.
