The new edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is returning with much more excitement and enthusiasm, and along with it the passion to perform is even bigger. With its onset in the year 2008, many other leagues in the world have tried to replicate the success of this renowned league, however, none of them has even come closer.

Talking about Australia's domestic T20 competition, Big Bash League has been one of the most admired league after the IPL. Therefore, we have decided to compare the IPL sides to the BBL teams and see how they resemble with each other.

BBL teams and their counterparts in IPL:

1. Perth Scorchers - Mumbai Indians

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have been the best in the business and moving towards BBL, Perth Scorchers have been brilliant too during the entire course. Perth have been so good that they were able to defend their title twice. Similarly, Mumbai defended the title back in 2020 after they won the championship in 2019.

Moreover, MI's five trophies came in the years 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 whereas 2013/14, 2014/15, 2016/17, 2021/22, and 2022/23 were the years for Scorchers.

Led by Rohit Sharma and Ashton Turner, both these sides have been terrific and it won't be a surprise if they manage to bag another in their tally.

2. Sydney Sixers - Chennai Super Kings

Seven finals for Sydney Sixers and nine for Chennai Super Kings demonstrate the kind of dominance that they have maintained over the years. MS Dhoni-led CSK have won four titles, conversely, the Sixers have held the trophy on three occasions.

Talking about the number of appearances in the finals, the Sydney-based side have made it to the grand occasion six times out of twelve while the Super Kings have featured in nine finals out of thirteen editions they have played in.

The finals aren't easy to feature in but these two sides have made it their cup and for sure, they would be appearing in many more of them.

3. Melbourne Stars - Royal Challengers Bangalore

If rotten luck is something then these two sides must be aware of it, quite nicely. Both of them haven't been able to lift the silverware in all these years despite the fact that they have boasted some big names in their armoury.

Royal Challengers Bangalore have had the likes of Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the past along with Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell still in the side whereas the Stars too have Maxwell with Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis in their ranks.

With three appearances in the finals for both of them, they have always been one shot away from the coveted trophy.

4. Brisbane Heat - Kolkata Knight Riders

The two-time champions of the Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have always been rated highly because of their tactical game which came to the fore during the years 2012 and 2014 when they were being led by Indian veteran Gautam Gambhir.

Similar to KKR, Brisbane Heat won the title early but couldn't really do much after that season. However, they were decent enough to feature in the finals of the 2022-23 season where they lost out to Perth Scorchers.

The quality of their players have been top notch along with their fan bases which have been extremely supportive of their respective sides.

5. Adelaide Strikers - Sunrisers Hyderabad

Both Adelaide Strikers and Sunrisers Hyderabad have had similar fates in their respective leagues. With one trophy under their name, they have proved everyone wrong about their capabilities.

The dark horses of BBL and IPL won their trophies in the year 2017/18 and 2016, respectively which is when they were least expected to.

Moreover, these sides have always punched above their waists which is why they are emerging as serious contenders. The fact that they started as weaker sides and transformed into powerhouses is a statement in itself.
