In a big blow to the aspirations of New Zealand, their star batter and captain Kane Williamson is set to miss the 2023 World Cup in India after he was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury on his right knee.

The injury occurred during the opening game of the IPL 2023, when playing for Gujarat Titans, Williamson attempted a catch on the boundary ropes and landed awkwardly which caused an injury on his right knee.

Williamson's effort on the boundary ropes did save a boundary for his side, but he twisted his knee and was in pain as he fell down clutching his knee.

A stalwart for New Zealand across formats, Williamson's injury is a massive blow for the Black Caps who look to win their maiden World Cup title.

Earlier this week, Williamson returned back to New Zealand and will undergo a surgery once the swelling on the right knee reduces.

"Naturally it's disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab. It's going to take some time, but I'll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible," Williamson stated.

In the absence of Williamson, it is likely that Tom Latham will lead the Kiwis heading into the World Cup. Over the years, Latham has done well as a New Zealand captain and the team management will bank on him to deliver the goods.
